R. 'Harold Amateis'

Elepidote Rhododendron: 'Harold Amateis'

Flower vivid red with dark maroon throat and darker spotting, campanulate, 2¼" across.  Held in trusses with about 20 flowers.  Blooms midseason.  Leaves rugose, depressed midrib, 6" long, medium green, slight fawn indumentum.  Grows to a typical height of 4 ft. in 10 years.  Hardy to -10°F (-23°C).  Hybridized by Amateis.

 
R. 'Dora Amateis'

Lepidote Rhododendron: 'Dora Amateis'

Flower white with faint green spotting, broadly funnel-shaped, 2" across, sometimes fragrant.  Held in lax trusses of 6-8 flowers.  Blooms early midseason.  Leaves 1½" to 2½" long, re-curved, dark green.  Prefers some shade for best performance.  Typical height: 3 ft. in 10 years.  Grows twice as wide as tall.  Cold hardy to -15°F (-26°C).  Royal Horticulture Society Award of Garden Merit.  Hybridized by Amateis.

 
R. 'Firestar'

Evergreen Azalea: 'Firestar'

Flower reddish orange, saucer-shaped, unmarked, about 1" across.  Inflorescence 1-3 flowered.  Blooms midseason.  Leaves elliptic, acute apex, cuneate base, about x" long, glossy, deep green, turning red in winter.  Open, upright plant habit.  Grows to a height of 4 ft. in 10 years.  Cold hardy to -5°F (-21°C). Introduced my Schepens.

 
R. viscosum '

Deciduous Azalea: R. viscosum "Pink Mist"

Flower funnel-shaped with long slender tube, 1¼" across.  Flowers of "Pink Mist" variety are pink colored.  Strong, clove-like scent.  Truss has 4-9 flowers.  Blooms very late.  Leaves ovate or obovate, wedge-shaped base, short-pointed apex, up to 3" long, dark green, deciduous.  Loose open habit, with many spreading branches.  Grows to a typical height of 5 ft. in 10 years.  Cold hardy to -20°F (-29°C).  Native to Eastern USA.  The "Pink Mist" variety was discovered in Connecticut.
