R. 'Calsap'

Elepidote Rhododendron: 'Calsap'

Flower white with a dark red blotch, reverse flushed very pale purple, tubular funnel-shaped, wavy edges, 2¾" across.  Conical-shaped truss holds 18 flowers.  Blooms late midseason.  Leaves oblong shaped with apiculate apex and cuneate base, convex, 5½" long, emerald green, retained 2 years.  Plant needs some sun for dense habit.  Grows to a typical height of 4 ft. in 10 years.  Cold hardy to -25°F (-32°C).  Hybridized by Michener.

Lepidote Rhododendron: R. mucronulatum var. mucronulatum

Flower pink to mauve to rosy purple, widely funnel shaped.  Inflorescence 1 flowered, often from multiple buds.  Blooms very early.  Leaves elliptic to lanceolate, up to 3" long, deciduous, scaly below.  Upright, erect plant habit.  Typical height is 5 ft. in 10 years.  Cold hardy to -20°F (-29°C).  Native species found in the wilds in Siberia, Korea, Mongolia, China (Hubei, Shandong), and Japan (Honshu, Kyushu).

Evergreen Azalea: R. kiusianum var. kiusianum

Flower salmon-red, pink, or purple, funnel-shaped, about 1" across.  Inflorescence 2-3 flowered.  Blooms midseason to late midseason.  Leaves oval to obovate, up to ¾" long, top and bottom covered with short, reddish-brown hair.  Plant is almost deciduous.  Compact, many branched habit.  Low growing reaching a height of about 2 ft. in 10 years.  Cold hardy to -10°F (-23°C).  Native species found in Japan (Kyushu).

Deciduous Azalea: 'Millennium'

Flower inside strong red with pale orange dorsal flare, outside vivid red, tubular funnel-shaped, broadly spread lobes, wavy edges, fragrant, 1¾" across.  Dome-shaped truss holds 6 flowers.  Blooms very late.  Leaves obovate, broadly acute apex, cuneate base, up-curved margins, 2" long, semi-glossy, dark bluish green.  Mildew resistant.  Grows about 4 ft. tall in 10 years.  Hardy to -20°F (-29°C).  Hybridized by Mezitt.
